Game of Thrones is a raucous feast for its viewer's eyes. Extending the epic imagination of George RR Martin's original novels, the HBO series success boils up hugely from it's utter beauty. From the intricate detail of the
costumes, the insane dedication to
CGI mastery, the exotic locations, and of course the handsome cast, the series would be essentially naked, the scripted skin and character bones left open to the elements of viewer ratings and reviewer squints, were it not for the thought and gabardine imagination of the first, second and repeat impression.

Will Simpson's Orbital Comics exhibition poster |
So before any of the episodes have been committed to digital camera, pencil lines are cast upon paper, mood boards and story boards are constructed, ideas are evolved, looks are born, scenes are framed and the wild beasts of Westeros and Essos are captured.
Will Simpson is an artist who has been visually conceiving the mystical worlds of
Game Of Thrones since Season 2 in 2011. His artwork has recently been on display at
Orbital Comics exhibition for the very lucky people who could make it. Prior to his work on
Game of Thrones, Simpson has also had an incredible career in the British comic book industry, having worked for 2000AD and Warrior, on titles including
Batman, Judge Dredd and
Rogue Trooper.
I took some photos, which by no means do justice to the utterly gorgeous talent that flows from this man's fingers, that
attempt to show just how stunning his work is. What I think is incredible is that Simpson's developing eye for the characters are literally at the very first stages of visualising the Lannister's to the Stark's, so the strength of
Daenerys Targaryen is in every line of his pieces on Orbital's walls. Her defiant, raised chin, bearing her sprawling dragon children about her empire-fierce shoulders, in the piece 'Drakaris'. The perfect harmony between master and pupil,
Syrio Forel and Arya Stark, reflected within the beautifully balanced framing of Simpson's piece 'The Water Dancers'. To die for art (but not quite in the same way as Ned Stark, mind).
Enjoy!
